This was no raid, so there was no need for the swift long ships. The initial spark for The Band of the Crow, my newly-finished fantasy novel, came to me in 2006. It's the story of Orm Tostesson, born in what is today southern Sweden in the mid-10th century, and his life and travels as a viking.
